Dollar boost a must for health agreement: doctors

The Queensland Australian Medical Association (AMA) says an interim health funding agreement between the Commonwealth and the states will be a waste of time unless it offers a major boost in spending.

Federal Health Minister Nicola Roxon says she will consider negotiating an interim agreement while the Health Reform Commission examines the future of the sector.

The current five-year funding deal is due to expire mid-year.

AMA Queensland president, Dr Ross Cartmill, says the health system needs a $3 billion boost nationwide.

“If an interim agreement means dollars are going to be put in to adequately fund health then that’s very good,” he said.

“If an interim agreement has nothing to do with increasing funding it’s a waste of time.

“We really need to fund health properly. Until we do that the problems will persist.”

Over the past couple of weeks, we have been trying to add some extras to the sidebar on the Blog in the hope that it provides more scope for you the Blog user. These extras include two new web links with logos and two RSS Web feeds. They are from the About Nursing web site and the ABC Health News. If you have a website to do with health and nursing and it has a RSS web feed and would like your feed placed on this site, please contact the webmaster at pessam@bigpond.net.au and we will look at adding your feed.

We have also added a platial map widget where we hope to plot the location of every Hospital and health care facility in Australia. This is open for everyone to edit the map, so please contribute. The webmasters will take along time to plot every location in Australia by themselves!
