Ovulation pain
Ovulation is a phase of the female menstrual cycle, which involves the release of an egg (ovum) from one of the ovaries. For most women, ovulation occurs about once every month until menopause, apart from episodes of pregnancy and breastfeeding.
About one in five women experience pain and discomfort during ovulation. The duration of the pain varies from one woman to the next, but ranges from a few minutes to 48 hours. In most cases, ovulation pain doesn’t mean that anything is wrong. However, severe pain may sometimes be symptomatic of gynaecological conditions including endometriosis. See your doctor if your ovulation pain lasts longer than three days or is associated with other unusual menstrual symptoms, such as heavy bleeding. Ovulation pain is also known as mid-cycle pain and mittelschmerz (German for ‘middle pain’).
Symptoms
The symptoms of ovulation pain can include:
* Pain in the lower abdomen, just inside the hip bone.
* The pain typically occurs about two weeks before the menstrual period is due.
* The pain is felt on the right or left side, depending on which ovary is releasing an egg.
* The pain may switch from one side to the other from one cycle to the next, or remain on one side for a few cycles.
* The pain sensation varies between individuals – for example, it could feel like uncomfortable pressure, twinges, sharp pains or cramps.
* The duration of pain ranges anywhere from minutes to 48 hours.
Theories on possible causes
The exact cause of ovulation pain is not clear, but theories include:
* Emerging follicle – hormones prompt the ovaries to produce around 20 follicles. Each follicle contains an immature egg (ovum) but only one follicle usually survives to maturity. It is supposed that ovulation pain is caused by the expanding follicle stretching the membrane of the ovary.
* Ruptured follicle – when the egg is mature, it bursts from the follicle. This may cause slight bleeding. The peritoneum (abdominal lining) could be irritated by the blood or fluids from the ruptured follicle, and this may trigger the pain.
Underlying medical problems
In most cases, ovulation pain is harmless. However, severe and prolonged ovulation pain, or other pains felt in the lower abdomen, can be symptomatic of various medical conditions including:
* Salpingitis – inflammation of the fallopian tubes following an infection.
* Chronic pelvic inflammatory disease – inflammation following an infection.
* Endometriosis – the lining of the womb (endometrium) grows in other locations, such as the bowel. Other symptoms include painful periods and painful sex.
* Ovarian cyst – an abnormal pocket of fluid that develops on the ovary.
* Ectopic pregnancy – a pregnancy that develops outside of the womb, most commonly in one of the fallopian tubes. Symptoms include cramping, abdominal pain and vaginal bleeding. Seek urgent medical help.
* Appendicitis – inflammation of the appendix can sometimes be confused with ovulation pain. Seek urgent medical help if the pain is on the right side of your abdomen and you are experiencing nausea and vomiting.
* Other gastrointestinal problems – lower abdominal pain can be symptomatic of a range of gastrointestinal problems, including perforated ulcer, gastroenteritis and inflammatory bowel disease.
Diagnosis methods
Tests that help determine whether ovulation pain is harmless or caused by infection or disease may include:
* Medical history
* Physical examination, including an internal pelvic examination
* Blood tests
* Cervical cultures
* Abdominal ultrasound
* Vaginal ultrasound
* Exploratory surgery (laparoscopy or ‘keyhole’ surgery).
Taking care of yourself
Consult with your doctor to make sure that your ovulation pain isn’t caused by any underlying medical problem. Suggestions on taking care of benign ovulation pain yourself include:
* Relax. If the pain is particularly bothersome, rest in bed whenever you can.
* Use pain-killing medication.
* Warmth on the lower abdomen may help. Use heat packs, hot water bottles or warm baths.
* Take anti-inflammatory drugs. See your doctor or pharmacist for recommendations.
* The Pill and other forms of hormonal contraceptive can prevent ovulation pain because they stop ovulation. Talk over this option with your doctor.
* See your doctor if you experience ovulation pain that lasts longer than three days, or if you have other symptoms such as heavy bleeding or discharge.
Family planning
Chances of conception are high if a couple have sex in the days before, during and after ovulation. Some women rely on ovulation pain to help them plan a pregnancy. However, it is unwise to rely on ovulation pain alone if you’re trying to avoid pregnancy. Always use other methods of birth control.

Hi, I have really bad pain during ovulation. I would like to know can you only become pregnant if you have s.. during ovulation period??
It’s difficult for me to have s.. during this period because of the pain.
Exactly wish day should I do it, to become pregnant. During the pain or when the egg’s been set free, after the pain.
Please explain to me, Many thanks.
typically the egg lasts about 24 hours after it is released from ovary, so your best bet is to have s.. before you actually ovulate. That will give sperm time enough to travel through the fallopian tube to fertilize egg soon after it is released. The fertilized egg then will continue traveling down fallopian tube, becoming a blastula, and then implanting into the uterus.
Hello.
I am 45 years old and lately I have noticed that i present similar PMS symptoms during my ovulation as well including anxiety, depression, irritability, insomnia, etc. I have reported these symptoms to my doctor. However, he does not have an answer for it. I am currently taking a suplement namded Cohosh and Isoflavones 2 times a day. It did help at the begining. However, these symptoms are returning with more frequency. What I have a hard time understanding is why do I feel this way during ovulation?
Thanks .
OM Gosh, you just described me to a “t”. That is exactly what is going on with me—-glad to know I am not in the boat alone@
Same thing is happening with me. what did you find out?
I have been having problems with insomnia during my ovulation for over a year and could not find any correlation. I’m 39 years old so I believe it might be due to hormonal changes. I am having my hormones tested by my naturopath to see what is going on. She is having me do a month long saliva test to see how my hormones fluctuate during my menstrual cycle. There has to be something hormonal going on since it occurs at the same time of the month. I’ll let you know what I find out!
my too just going through a similar thing of late
I have noticed these symptoms as well. What did you find out?
you may have premenstrual dysphoric disorder. make a list of your symptoms including physical pain, moods, & affectations of daily living activites and go to a D.O. instead of an M.D. Better yet, go to a psychiatrist if possible.
Why Doctor of Osteopathy over a Medical Doctor? Because a D.O. has the same training as an M.D. plus a year or two more concerning holistic body healing –> meaning they won’t just try to send you home and say nothing is wrong or not listen because your problem has to do with the feminine mysterious area of reproductive system … they will actually try and understand that this one thing is affecting your whole life and body as a whole even if its just for these few ovulation days!! Really in the end, seeing all the posts and minimal replies it seems that women with mittelschmerz really just want to be heard and have a little more research to turn to in this area.
Hi Katia,
I am 40 years old and I have had these symptoms too. My doctor has put me on 100mg of bio-identical progesterone starting from the day my period ends until it begins again. My ovulation pain is gone and my depression and irritability has decrease dramatically. My doctor says she is just replacing what my body is missing.
I tried birth control pills and it just made all of my symptoms worse.
I hope this helps. God bless!!
Katherine
I forgot to say it is 100mg capsule. The cream didn’t work for me.
All the very best,
Katherine
I am 43 and start to have severe ovulatory pain now
Hi I am 26 years old and I have lived with pain during ovulation for the past 10 years. My doctors have all said that it is cysts that form on my ovaries and then pop off, however after checking on the internet now I am not too sure. From what I have read on this site and others it just could be pain from ovulating that may come in handy when I want to have children. My mother, grandmother, at least one of my female cousins, and I all have this pain. The pain has varied with all of us but it happens when we all ovulate. One of the doctors prescribed me birth control pills and I have been taking them for 5 months, they have helped tremendously and I am very grateful for that. Now if there are other ways of regulating the pain other then the pill I would be happy. My fiancee and I want to have kids after we are married, so if anyone has any suggestions of something that I could take to help with the pain while trying to have kids that would be great. I have often wondered if this is genetic within some families.
I have the same problem and what I did was get off the birth control and take 800 mg of motrin everytime I started to hurt and boom! I got pregnant just months later.
Hi I`m 32 and trying to get pregnant for the first time.
I have used a contraceptive implant for exatelly one year and then stop to start trying for a baby and have never used contraceptive before. Only after remuved the implant I started felling the ovulation pain. Is that normal? Why I never fell the pain before?
I did the same thing. I had been on hormonal birth control for about ten years and then switched to the copper IUD (which has *no* hormones) Shortly after being off the pill I felt the ovulation pains. Hormonal birth control tends to suppress ovulation so that’s probably why you didn’t feel it before but do now.
(I realize this reply is years late, but maybe it can help someone else!)
I usually experience painfull urination during ovaluation. what prescription should i use to stop it? and is it normal? my friend don’t experience it like that. i am afraid i dont know if am sick because during the ovaluation, sometimes i run temperature and am hot inside i can’t even bend down sometimes. please am i ok or need some drugs. please reply
i am 46 years old and last month sufferd this terrible pain for whitch the doctor told me it was ovulating pain i will be due soon and will see if it happens again.
About once a month I get a very strong pressure in my abdomen that causes me to bend over and not be able to walk. It almost feels like really bad gas (pardon the expression). Could this be a form of ovulation pain or is it probably something else. It usually lasts a few hours and then goes away but man its intense. I usually get it later in my cycle. Last time was on day 21. Could I be ovulating later? My periods are pretty regular. Anybody else have anything similar?
I have the same symptoms and found out its IBS. Irritable Bowel Syndrome. And this gets worst during Ovulation and Periods.

hi i am 45, i have been having severe ovulation pain for more than 15 yrs. recently the pain is sharper and i find myslef screaming in pain. its a combination of back and lower left abdominal pain. my doctors have done pap smears, abdominal and virginal ultra sounds. nothing is wrong with me they said and its normal ovulation pain.
they have recommended hot water bottles, pain killer and anti inflammatory medication- this helps a little but not much.
i have been told to go on contraceptives but i refuse to do so since my mother is a breast cancer patient and i am afraid to take anything which can make me at greater risk for cancer.
during these ovulation pain i feel the need to pass urine and stool more often. IS THIS NORMAL( this only hapens during the three days of ovulation)
ARE THERE ANY OTHER OPTIONS I HAVE THAT CAN HELP ME TO DEAL WITH THESE REALLY SEVERE AND DEBILITATING PAIN. (the pain last for 3 days mid cycle and then goes away)
What anti inflammatory drugs works well with this.
what may be a good strong pain killler for this pain.
my doctor diagnosed me with poly cystic ovary syndrome after i went off birth control and had my tubes tied…this is just a part of my monthly life for the past 5 years…he prescribed the painkiller tramadol (ultram)…it is a non narcotic and does help…hope this helps you all
I am 24 and have been having horrible abdominal pains (more like intense gas pains that wont pass) that take over my life for 12-48 hours just about once a month. These pains have sent me to the emergency room a couple of times but no one has found a cause. All tests come back normal. Now that i have done some research on my own, it sounds like it could be related to ovulation. My periods are not regular but the pain is. Its like clockwork. Just about every month they come and I am incapacitaded. The pains started about two years ago after I stopped taking birth control pills which i had been taking for 3 or 4 years.
I am still not convinced that it is due to ovulation because it doesn’t hurt to pee or to have sex (actually I havent tried during the pains but I can imagine that it wouldnt), nor is the pain restricted to the inner hip area. This pain is spread all the way from my lower belly up into my chest – and its bad.
Can anyone else relate to this??
Ideas?
Thank you!
I have terrible ovulation pains. My periods are every 28-30 days and on day 12-14 I get terrible abdominal pains. I feel bloated, the need to use the bathroom frequently and pain during intercourse. The pain sometimes goes all the way through to my back. I too have had trips to the emergency room thinking something was seriously wrong. Since my periods and ovulation are regular I prepare by taking ibuprophen on day 12-14 so the inflammation and pain is less before it even starts. Heat and ice help and I have taken vicoden for the pain as well. I sympathise with all women who have these pains.

I am 43 yrs old. I’ve only noticed my ovulation pain in the last few years because of trying one last time to become pregnant. Before trying, I truly did not know much about ovulation so never paid attention. I do notice some months are different than others. Sometimes its very noticable and sometimes not. Although its never extremely painful. More like isolated PMS. The one thing that I did want to know from others that do get ovulation pain is if they happen to know when exactly they are ovulating. Is the pain before, during or after the ovulation. For example, I had very slight cramping Christmas Night, woke up and had about an hour of pretty good cramps while making breakfast, then it went away for a bit (after sex), then that night…OMG….the gas pains were intense and I had to just go to bed and lay down. Woke up this morning and I still feel something, but not much. I’m trying to figure out when exactly I ovulated. Was it during that one hour of intense cramping? If so….I think we missed the window…lol.
Hi,
I am 25 yrs old, I have been having these pains for about 1 yr now. I guess what I would like to know will I always have these pains are will they go away since I have not had them a long time? They dont last long but they bother me. So is it normal to just start having these pains when you have no previous history of ovulation pains? PLEASE HELP!!
I am 27 and have had these pains for probably 5 years or more and I had no idea that that was what it was until a friend told me and sure enough she was right on the money with symptoms and where it was. Mine are usually predominately on the left side almost right in the middle diagonally between my belly button and my left hip bone. I get them and just grit my teeth and it hurts and then it goes away and usually comes back a few times over the next few hours and then the next day but most only last about 10-20 seconds. It is a very very sharp stabbing pain almost. Much worse than a gas cramp or normal cramp. I think if you are feeling the pain in your abs or stomach or anywhere out of your normal cramp area that you might want to go to a doctor. That seems bad. I have been on the pill for almost 6 years and it doesn’t seem to do anything different for them…
Hi, I’m 29 years old and I want an answer to this question. Can anyone help??
My period varies from 28-35 days and its been regular.I want to know that if I get my periods regularly should it mean that I’ ovulating properly every month or its like I’ll get my periods even if I’m not ovulating??
Thanks,
Sangeetha
Hey Christine,I’m nearly 43 and trying for another child and Your situation seems similar to me,the pain varys from each individual woman but the ovulation pains start at the start of your ovulation and in the middle of it,I suggest you buy an ovulation kit from a super market or store like Big W or Kmart, general store, which are cheaper and when you get that mucus which is a slimey feeling in your vagina it means take an ovulation test they are terific and work wonders, ive been monitering mine for over a year no luck so far,but Ive got it so presise thanks to these kits, and now I dont use them as I have mastered it to a tea, Good Luck
Hello everyone! I am 32 and have been experiencing ovulation pains for the past 7 years. This time though has been the worst. Like Caroline in an earlier post, I too had a pain on the lower left side of my abdomen that shot all the way up to my chest. I went to my GP because there was pain in my chest, but as it turns out it has everything to do with my pelvis. I have an appt. today with my obgyn and I am hoping to find out more than just it is a really bad ovulation episode. I will post if I learn anything new!

Hi,
I am 28 years old. I had a miscarriage in may 2008 when I was 5 weeks into pregnancy. From the next coupe of months, the ovulation pain(still not sure if it is this) started. Never ever had it before. I went to the emergency room because it was very bad once and then they said it was nothing. No gas, no bloating, no appendicitis. But, this pain has been ever since. Except for that one time, it did not handicap me at all…But it always has remained after the miscarriage.
I spoke to my obgyn about this and she told me that it is most likely ovulation pain. But, I am not sure why it should only start after the m/c.
im a 18yr old girl and have been getting adomal pains i went to the doctors and they told me wen i overlate my ovaries are popping is there anything for me to worry about
Hi, i also need an answer to the pains i experience every month on the lower right side of my abdomen. I’m 40 and have experienced this pain since i was 20. I was told its ovulation pain and i use ibuprofen and hot water bottle which fairly reduces the pain but doesnt get rid of it totally. I want to know why during this period i feel bloated and my tummy becomes hard and big. Should i be concerned?
I’m 41 and am trying to have another child. My husband and I have tried the last 4 months and no success. I am using the Clear Blue Easy Ovulation test now and before I took it this morning, I felt the pains coming on. Sure enough I’m ovulating. My question is could I of started ovulating yesterday and when the egg is released, that is when I feel the pain? They said in this website that it is only theory of when the pain actually occurs. Anybody have any better knowledge?
I get mild pains for one day when I ovulate and this is how I know when I do. This has been happening off and on now for the past several years. It doesn’t hurt severely and I can go about my day normally, just with this slightly full feeling and pressure in my abdomen near my left hip bone. I think I always feel it there because my whole uterus (so a doctor once told me) is located more to that side.
My understanding is that ovulation occurs mid-cycle and about two weeks before your period begins. This has been my experience and I can time my periods by when I feel mittelschmerz. It’s like clockwork and, although it’s uncomfortable, I find it useful and a bit of a miracle.
Sex definitely helps ease the pain and so does yoga. Sitting or laying around doesn’t do much for me. I have to move around and get my heart rate up. Chamomile tea is useful too. I’ve not used a heating pad or hot water bottle, but I might now. I won’t take The Pill.
I haven’t yet tried to get pregnant, but I’ll be using my pain as a gauge for when is the best time once I do try. But, really, any day between the 8th and 19th day of a woman’s cycle is a possible time for her to get pregnant. You don’t have to have sex on the exact day (or around the day) you ovulate to make a baby.
The whole system kind of seems to be set up for conception, really. It’s not that much of a mystery.
i have pain on the 10 day to 14. my lower tummy is hot and pain when i touch it. my cycle ranges from 24-27. I dont have pain during penetration but due this pain i cant have sex bcos my legs and tummy are painful. at this time i experience burning sensation on my thigh. i have to the bathroom more often, constipation, nausea,
During menses i start spotting 2-4 days bofore menses it last for 5 days and its heavy and painful.
I tried clomid 3 times and no results now using chasteberry. Full blood count was done by my dr all it normal

hi im katie, im 30 yrs old, after i had my daughter, now 2 and a half ive been experiencing really bad ovulating pains, its like some one is sticking a knife in my abdomen and twisting it, the pain is excrutiating, im bent over and can barley walk, ive now gotton use to it, and as soon as i feel the pain coming i take pain killers and there gone as soon as the pain relief kicks in, but seriously ive never experienced pain like this, its so uncomfortable… after reading the posts on the page, im not so worried now, as it always happens two weeks after my period, so its deffinetly ovulation pain.. but why have i never gotton it before i fell pregnant~?
Wow I’m 36 mom of 4 and I’ve had the Essure procedure done….this pain stops me in my tracks I’ve had it for years. ..I finally decided last Friday I. Would take some pain medicine and in a few minutes the pain was GONE!I didn’t know what to do I was so grateful for mortin it’s good to know I’m not the only one!
We should thank you for giving such a wonderful site. Your website happens to be not just useful but also very creative too. We come across very few people who are capable of write technical articles that creatively. I search for articles on something like this. I searched in several websites to acquire knowledge regarding this.We look forward to much more !!
I’ve had pain mid-cycle ever since I can remember.
On the pill… no pains. Wanted to get pregnant so came off the pill… pain back with a vengeance! Got pregnant… like magic, the pain went.
When my periods started up again, bang, pain was back. It last about a week and starts just as my period is ending. It builds up to being excruciating and then just stops and I assume that is when the egg pops out (my image!).
I worry a lot about it, but feel so much better now cos I know I’m not the only one.
You girls all have my sympathy!
My experience of doctors: as long as you’re not dying anytime soon they couldn’t care less.
And I really feel they don’t believe me when I say it’s excruciating and lasts a week.
I’m 45 and I’d go back on the pill but it gives me migraines which is, I believe, a no-no.
Good luck to everyone!
Like yourself i have had ovulation pain for years had all the tests can’t find anything wrong but i have realised through the years to take windezz which is an anti spasmotic pain relief when you feel the niggles of pain chew two of these the pain goes away in 20 mins. Hope it works for you all the best.
To the ladies who felt severe anxiety from ovulation to period –> research PMDD (premenstrual dysphoric disorder).
To the ladies with extreme pain –> take anti-inflammatory & begin hydrating before expected ovulation date and use Therma-knee type of flat heat patches under clothes for comfort. Do yoga or relaxed stretching exercises and hydrate.
Hi i’m 35 and i’ve always suffered at ovulation time with feeling very bloated and the terrible pain in either side’Its good in one way because you always no when you are ovulating. I do find taking a couple of parecetamol really helps though; i also suffer with really bad discharge. That is the trouble with it being the best time to try for a baby cause you least feel in the mood. How lucky are men;
I’ve had ovulation pain on and off for years. I am 43 and it seems to get worse/grow more frequent with age. Based on the other posts, I believe it to be a mild case but it definitely puts me down for 24-36 hrs when it happens. My symptoms are: pain in the lower ab, frequent urination/loose bowel movements, headache, low back ache, more emotional, pale face, nausea, a blackout (happened only once, it was the worst time) and a general feeling of lethargy and abdominal bloating. I feel like I can’t button my pants or else it gets worse. Based on my own research it is due to a bursting follicle during ovulation which causes pain and some of the secretions from the bursting irritate the stomach lining which could explain the gas and loose bowels. My main question is: why does this happen in some women and not others? Is there a hormonal imbalance or too much LH (leutinizing hormone) present that causes the bursting of the follicle? There has to be an answer to this. I truly believe it is hormonal and could be helped to happen less frequently or not at all by finding out what hormone(s) are responsible and regulating them. That is probably why doctors prescribe the pill in these cases but I want to know the cause and have a true solution – not a synthetic one! There is more information out there today on natural hormone creams that help women tremendously with menopause, etc. and I think there could be a solution found in that direction.
Is your boobs suppose to hurt and swell during ovulation?
Hi, I only experience this deep pain when I have sex during my ovulation. it mostly result in discomfort feeling, making it difficult for me step on the floor or to even walk. I feel pressure at the mouth of my womb and inside my anus. It only happens when I have sex in my ovulation period. I really suffer when I have sex. What could this be?
I am 35 years old and since I basically began having periods I had severe periods and cramps through my teen years and part into my adulthood. I was put on an anti-inflamatory for years which helped. It wasn’t until I was in my late 20’s that I was diagnosed with endometrios. I stopped taking the med as the cramps got better, but I have been trying to get pregnant for the last past 4 plus years. apparently even though I have reg periods and I feel and see the signs of ovulation I am told that I am not ovulating regularly. Over the last year I have now been experiencing pains sometimes during or after my periods where I feel like it’s extreme gas built up in the abdomen and anal area. trying to pass bowel movements hurts extremely and I get intense cramps to the point it feels like my abdomen will burst.. I haven’t really found any relief, it even hurts to sit during this time. it lasts about 48 hours. I sometimes will experience discomfort during sex too. Apparently with endometrios the cells can grow near the anal area and this could be pushing against the wall. I am just starting with a new Dr and I am hoping he will have some answers.
Melanie, I see your post was a while ago (I just found this site today) but I just wanted to put this out there…..I also have endometriosis and much time was wasted trying to find the cause of infertility. If you were diagnosed with endometriosis, you must have had exploratory surgery, right? Any anatomical problems from the endo would have been corrected, then, hopefully. In that case, disregard this…but I would never have gotten pregnant if the surgeon didn’t go in and release endometrial adhesions that were distorting my anatomy and preventing pregnancy. I don’t know why doctors don’t recommend this earlier on, before all the Clomid is used up, other methods used, all the precious time is wasted to no avail. Anyway, I remember those days so well and you have my empathy and I wish you well. Thank goodness for all the strides made in medicine.
Rhanda, yes I did have surgery about 3-4 years ago and that is when the endometriosis was removed and they also found a polyp in my uterus which they also removed then. I was also diagnosed with PCOS which I was skeptical about becuase other then weight issues I showed really no signs of any of the symptoms of that disease other then I was consistently ovulating even though I also continued to have reg periods, and yet I also displayed signs of ovulation from everything I have read. I went on to try fertility drugs and IVF this past summer with no results. However I am estatic to report that since my original posting I found out in Jan that I am expecting for the very first time, and the ironic part is that it was all natural, no drug intervention. The only thing I started since the failed IVF is I started seeing a chiropractor after my massage therapist mentioned it. I was skeptical of course as I had never heard of this, but just 4 months later I am now preg, and besides changing my frame of mind about gettign pregnant I really haven’t changed anything else, and so I will never know the real reason but at this point, it doesn’t matter. what does matter is that I am now pregnant and hope and pray everything works out. I am now almost 10 weeks along!!
Only portion the post is displaying, strange, is this my internet browser or the internet website?
I started feeling ovulation pains last night??? I never use to get this before!
I’m on Clomphene pills… of 100mg…..
When should I have s..?
Hi..for about a week now i’ve been cramping in my pelvic area along with some otjer symtoms. I thought I was pregnant, so I tested a few times with negative results…but since my menstrual isn’t due for another 2 weeks, i figured its either too early to tell or its these ovaltion cramps you all are speaking of. My question is why am i having symptoms of preganancy?
Hi, I’m 50 and my husband is 40. We are trying to have a baby because he doesn’t have any children. I have five adults and had my tubes tied 18 years ago. We had my tubal reversal in February, and I have one patent tube, the left. I got pregnant three times with only the one tube before my ligation, so I’m not too worried about that.
I am now on Chinese herbal medicine and acupuncture to try and slow down my cycle from finishing and becoming menopause. I have only had three periods this year, but the last one came three weeks ago.
I have just started having ovulation pains, and I am ecstatic. I am finally starting to function again.
We are trying now, every night.
Love these pains! Bring them on every month!
🙂
This month I got ov pains for the first time ever. From day 8 of my cycle until cd 14-ish i had an achey feeling around my left hip area. I could feel it most when sitting and in bed at night. Around cd 13-14 i felt a pulsing/throbbing accompanied by a sharp pain on the left general abdominal area. I believe my follicles were growing so i felt more bloated and i had to use the bathroom much more often than usual, and i was nappping during the day… And did have mild nausea. i took soy isoflavones as an alternative to clomid because i don’t ovulate due to pcos. The signs and symptoms were there so i’m pretty sure i ovulated, just not sure which day since i had cramps and pains for about 5-6 days!
I am 41 years old and trying to ttc since the last two years. when i enquired from my doctor, she said that my follicles were not able to release the eggs and the eggs turn into cysts. she gave me some medicines but to no avail. Now i want to get pregnant without taking any medicines. Mostly, alternate days we have sex. please suggest. i am desperate to get pregnant.

I been having some symptoms of urges to go urinate alot and my stomache hurts and a burning sensation in my inner thigh I’m close to my menstrual cycle but I don’t know if the problem is my ovulation. I have went to the doctor thinking I had a urine or bladder infection but was okay they gave me pills just in case but still the same. I only have the urges to go when I sit down for awhile. Can anyone tell me what is going on with my body.
I greatly appreciate it.
Hi, I’m 25n sigle and not sexually active and was diagnosed by my gynaecologist since 3 years ago with ovulation pain and at the same time also having a biaconuate uterus with the love shape on its upper part. Until today I still facing a very bad ovulation pain which also make me unable to walk and sit. This usually occurred for 3-4 days every month and only on the right part. Last month gyne as me to take Loette for 21 days. Son no ovuation and I not having pain. However, the pill caused mea very bad coughing for 3 weeks. Then gyne suggest me to try Mercilon.I take only 1 pill and unable to work for 2 days..so, refer back to doctor’s and at the same time fighting with the pain, she ask me to stop the pill and take voltaren to reduce pain.
What else can I do to lower the pain? Use hot bottle not helpful at all.
TQm .
I am 41 and have had severe ovulation pains for the last three years, ever since I got off the bc pill. The pain was sharp, on the left side and lasted for 5 -6 days when i would take several advil to get some relief. I tried acupuncture (with moxibusition) for two months, twice a week (october – december last year) and the pain is almost gone! I would say I have 5% pain left and it only lasts about 1.5 day. Unfortunately, I have also been trying to get pregnant for the last 3.5 years and have failed six times… 4 miscarriages and 2 failed donor egg procedures. Was hoping the acupuncture would improve my chances of getting pregnant, but it has not. The good news is, my ovulation pains are greatly diminished.
I have endometriosis (only confirmed with exploratory laparoscopy) and many of these comments are exactly what I have. I’m an RN so I feel like I have a general grip on cause and effect of symptoms, but endometriosis is mysterious and haphazard. I had adhesions corrected about 11 years ago, but was told they could recur and be worse, or may improve…..it’s a crap shoot. Endometriosis can make ovulation and menses more painful or uncomfortable. I’m 44 and now have persistant right lower abdominal pain and am getting a colonscopy in a couple days to make sure it isn’t something else, but a total hysterectomy was recommended to me. That is a huge step and isn’t even a sure cure, so I’m looking for other options. Endometriosis, or endometrial adhesions can cause a lot of the symptoms you all are having. My gynocologist said they aren’t considered life threatening unless they cause bowel obstructions or severe bleeding, which isn’t common. They can cause infertility (in my case) by distorting the anatomy with adhesions glueing the ovaries in positions where they cannot uptake eggs, for instance. They can distort other organs and cause many of these symptoms, especially bowel and bladder issues and general pelvic pain. I think women can unfortunately expect a lot of troublesome transient issues, but if you’re really affected by them, research endometriosis and it may explain your symptoms. No easy solution, however. I wish you all answers to your pain. Seems like there are fewer and fewer comfortable days as we age:(
I am 25 years old and have never taken any pregnancy pill before. I started having this pain on the right side of my abdomen last month and dint know what it was all about. I have been trying to get pregnant for 3 months.when the pain came last month, i thought i had to see a doctor because the pain was severe but when i woke up the next morning, the pain was gone and i forgot about it. Now am having the pain on day 13 of my cycle of 27 days. Am so hapi that this is not happening to me alone. My question is why did the pain just begin suddenly? I am hoping that i will get pregnant this month then i will post all the tips i used.

I’m having that exact pain since yesterday when I went to work at noon .. but this morning! ! OMG! it got worst, it was cramping like hell.. Everything around me was IRRITATING me, especially my son when he was crying … I feel so bad & I just wish this pain goes away ASAP 😥
i too have ovulation pain, ive suffered from this since i was 17 and actually the entire high fertility time before ovulation i get incredibly nauseas and start throwing up, then after about 5 days of the sickness i ovulate, which is by the way extremely painful, i get a horrible pain usually in my left ovary today it was my right and the pain only lasts a few minutes and then its gone but the pain is so bad that i end up curled up in a ball wincing from the pain. i never realized what it was till i got an app on my phone for keeping track of your periods and it also tells you when you ovulate and the dates matched up perfectly! also once i realized it was ovulation pain i then found out i dont ovulate every month…
Ladies, so happy I’m not alone with this. Went to Endometriosis specialist this week for these same pains described by alot of you. I am 50 yrs. old and have missed 5 periods in the last yr. Living with this pain for six years. My pain is always on the left side radiates to my groin and top of thigh, last about three days and disappears until next month. It hurts more to sit, ride in car, also more painful if bending, lifting, working. Aches to lay on right side, I lay on stomach with left leg outstretched trying to get comfortable. Take Aleve, Ibubrophen for alittle relief. It’s an alarming pain that makes you feel something is WRONG!Renowned Endometriosis specialist said he thinks it’s my colon. I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease in June. Told him colonoscopy was perfect. I had a laproscopy when I was 22 for pelvic pain, doctor said I had endometriosis and adhesions and might have trouble getting pregnant.( I did have four pregnancies with preterm labor issues.) The renown specialist said endometriosis was over diagnosed back then and I would have had pain all along.( So I guess the gyno. who did laproscopy was a liar.) He said my internist was a quack with her natural remedies. He told me to get off her snake oil remedies and use HRT (combipatch). Gave samples, trying them, hot flashes better, but second day on, I’m having white discharge and the throbbing left side pain. He made me feel dumb, dismissed, like I don’t know how I feel. Started asking me about my bladder to change the subject, I told him I’m dealing with my bladder, I here to find out what this left side pain is. Any advice ladies?
I used to have ovulation pain before I got pregnant for the first time. After I had my baby and stopped breastfeeding I got my cycle back normal, but I can not feel the ovulation pain anymore. I would like to know why?

I have the same symptoms. I used to get alot of bladder infections as a child and fewer as i got older. I have noticed over the past few years them increasing so I keep track of when I get pains and I realized it’s always when I ovulate. I have never heard of ovulation pain before until reading this today. I thought these pains were me getting a bladder infections and maybe ovulation just triggers them so I just take some Cranberry pills for two days or so and the pain goes away. It feels like the same symptoms as a bladder infection. Thanks guys this explains alot.
I have the same problem. I have found that a combination of advil (anti-inflammatory properties) or the like and OVOL work. What is ovol? It is a miracle. Try it. I used to be doubled over in pain. This works…believe me.
Hi…im so glad i am not alone with this ovulation pain! it is very reassuring to have a website like this where i can relate to women with similar symptoms to me! its just so nice to know im not the only one. this is only the second month that i have experienced this pain, it occurs two weeks after my period and is a very sharp stabbing pain up through my vagina, into abdomen, into the back and upper thigh area, can be left and right side lasting around 3 days. it has been freaking me out wondering what it is so thankyou to everyone who has posted!
i experience a sharp pain alway times on my right side or my naval could it be possible that the ovum is always coming from my rit ovary not left.
Hi my name is toya and I had my tubes tied 9years ago but the other day when I went to the rest room and wipe I saw a little blood and both of my side was hurting so I went to the doctor and she said I was ovulation but I have never had pain before and now my feet is swelling and I feel sick see when my tube was tied 9years ago the doctor said he hope he had got the right tube good enough because I had to much bruise tissue on that side

I’m thankful I thought ovulation pain was abnormal. Cause I experience discomforts during this time. There is nothing we can do but ovulation pain and menstrual period pain are the periods that are unbearable to us as ladies. This is the time I think ladies who experience such should not be disturbed. Your article has actually helped me with some remedies

I read almost everyone’s comments about this experince….and trust me i feel everyone of you out there.
I’m 31 years old ..
in 2007 I got pregnant by accident but due other factors around us my husband (bf at the time) and I decided to have an abortion, I went for before and after ultrasounds and everything went well..
in 2009 we got married and a year later we decided to TTC, it wasn’t as easy as we wanted to be and for me being pregnant already before I thought conceiving wouldn’t be a problem at all.
After a year of trying I finally got pregnant , very exciting news..but something was telling me that something it wasnt right,I was getting some kind of cramps on my right side that lasted only few seconds and it’s gone ….I keept doing research on this weird pain but for some reason almost everyone’s blog that i read it made me think that my uterus is stratching due to the embryo growing…
.Around 8 w/k of my pregnancy i didn’t feel nausia as much as before….it got me thinking again but since i had no bleeding or anything i thought i’m being worried for nothing.
At 10 weeks I started having some spotting which ended up in the emergency and when they did my ultrasound they found that I have bi-cornate(heart shape) uterus and the embryo was sitting on the right horn, when i told them that i am 10 w/k pregnant they couldn’t believe because due to the measurements they took from ultrasound the embryo was very small and had no heartbit….so basically it stopped living a while ago but it took my body 10 weeks to realize that and finally ejected.
It was a very sad time for us and hard to recover but we never gave hope and been trying ever since.
I been having some pain in my mid cycle for a while now and having an intercourse it was very painful at times ….just this month I kept a close eye on it and it started at day 12 with a mild pain, day 13 very painful i feel so much pressure and bloated on my right side, barely made it through the day and day 14 it was pretty much the same pain as day 12 not so intense…so when i read comments above it could be ovulation pain i don’t know that for sure but I’m concerned of when if the best time to have intercourse and TTC with this pain?
if there anyone with Bi-cornate uterus that had or have this pain and got pregnant and had a successful pregnancy… any info it’s much appreciated…
thank you so much .
This website has been brill for information. I just went the hospital today as i’ve been having irregular periods and spotting between them. I had a scan both external and internal and results came back with cysts on on my left ovaries. When I spoke to my consultant about the chronic pain I was in yesterday, doubled up in pain like someone was tearing my insides with a hot poker and I couldn’t even walk upright had to walk hunched it scared the livining day lights out of me!! she told me it was ovulation pain, I looked at her daft!! I’ve been experiencing dull little stabbing pains each month but not on the degree of yesterday, but after reading comments on here I feel re-assured, so thank you 🙂
Gail,
You are having almost the same experience that I had years ago. I had the irregular periods and severe cramping while I was younger and growing up. I had just turned 21 and I woke up one morning and had to go to the bathroom at 3 a.m. and went back to bed and then at 7 a.m. I woke up again and got out of bed to go to the restroom and I hit the floor. I was doubled over in pain and couldn’t stand up. It was the worst feeling not knowing what was wrong and why I couldn’t stand up. My husband took me to the emergency room and I was admitted and it ended having emergency surgery because when the doctor pushed on my stomach I almost punched him because it hurt so bad and the doctor thought I had a ruptured appendix. He came out three different times and told my husband and parents three different things that were supposedly wrong with me, then he told my husband and parents it was an etopic pregnancy and then he finally told them it was a cyst on my ovary that had ruptured and he had to repair my ovary. I don’t have to worry about the appendix problem because they removed it while they had me open on the table, but I still worry about the cysts. I think some doctors can be so stupid even though they go through so many years of schooling to tell us what is wrong with us. We know our bodies and when something is not right, but they just don’t listen.
I can see after reading all of these posts that I am not the only one who has pain during ovulation. I thought I was just wierd. Yes it does hurt and mine hurts right above my pubic bone on both sides I guess where my fallopian tubes are and it is very aggravating. I too skip sex during this time because I believe that it is going to hurt and be uncomfortable. I hope the doctors figure out something to help with this because I now see that I am not the only woman suffering from this pain.
I’ve found slow sexual intercourse for me is a great way to relieve the pain, at least to start off. You might enjoy more rapid harder penetration once you get warmed up but hard penitration and certain possitions durring ovulation is painfulor uncomfortable to me.
im 29 years old and i noticed after my period ends i get a sharp Pain in my right side that last only for 48 hrs. im wondering if this is a sign that my egg is being released. ive also noticed a lot of lower back pain. Just wondering what going on.
Hi -I am 41 years old. I was on birth control most of my life because my menstrual cycle was never normal. I have been diagnosed with poly-cystic ovaries and was told the bc would help with the pain I would have when not on bc. In 2008 i expierenced severe abdominal pain that was so unbearable I went to the emergency room, I was in the hospital for 2 days and they couldnt figure it out after numerous tests, so they sent me home. Next day i get a call from the Dr that he wants to see me to go over the tests and requests that I come the next morning. So off I go and find out that I have a ruptured hepatic adenoma, very rare disease in women. If you are wondering what this is, it is tumors that are in my liver that have ruptured. They were caused by the hormones in the birth control and because of the duration I was on bc. 75% of my liver had to be removed to get rid of the tumors. During the surgery because of the liver issue they found a cyst on my right ovary the size equivilent to a 5 mos pregnancy and they had to remove my right ovary and right falopian tube. So all in all, I had alot removed, I can no longer take anykind of hormones because they have the possibility to produce more tumors in my liver. Since all this I have started to ovulate – something I don’t think I ever did before. I now expierence all sorts of pain in my lower abdomen. I thought it was gas as that’s how it felt. But after reading this page, I don’t think gas is the problem. I’m glad I found all this information cause now I can bring it up to my Dr and I can try the motrin for the pain in hopes that it will help. Thank you to all for posting. I feel better that I’m not the only one suffering with this kind of pain.

This was very helpful information! I’ve also read through some of the comments and it looks to me like most females start “ovulation pain” in their early 20s. I’m 23 with a “regular” cycle and I believe I really started noticing this “pain” at about 19. I almost have my whole cycle to a science. To me it starts as the pinching on the lower abdomin, usually from a certin side, some months on the left sometimes right. The left side usually seems more intense to me. Then a day or 2 of slight to intense cramping or some kind of contracting. Its nice to see others experience this as well as reading some females don’t experience it at all!
Fantastic site. A lot of helpful info here. I am sending it to several buddies ans also sharing in
delicious. And obviously, thanks on your effort!
Hi I came off the pil and I forgot how severe my pain was during ovelation . I wish it only last for 48 hrs but it does last longer but mainly effects me at night .. The pain wakes me up its that bad and it’s like a muscle spasum .. Generally last really bad for 2-5 mins the evently fades then 2-3 hrs next pain nightmare .
Why would I had to go on pil for the rest of my life just to have a normal life..
Great post. I used to be checking continuously this weblog and I am impressed!

By the way, how could we be in contact?
I know this if off topic but I’m looking into starting my own blog and was wondering what all is required to get setup? I’m
assuming having a blog like yours would cost a pretty
penny? I’m not very web smart so I’m not 100% sure.
Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

The success of physical therapy can be noticed in the improvement of the patient’s daily
activities. To help relieve back pain resulting from strained
or injured back muscles, give your back plenty
of rest. Lower back pain can be triggered by a number of factors and different part of the back that can be affected.
Great to see this site which gives me lot of info. for ovulation pain & knowing that I’m not alone. I’m 44 chinese, no child. I used to have mense pain since young and just got mid-cycle pain 2 years ago. It doesn’t with me every month but sometimes I just feel it hurts me really bad.
Have had a couple of pelvic ultra sound, all normal except a couple of fibroids around 3-4cm in size, no operation is advised.
It usually happens at 8-10 day after the first day of my mense and last for 3-4 days. This month it’s tough & I feel bloated with frequent urination, discomfort all over my lower ab. & upper legs, it’s the 6th day now, getting better but still got cramps on legs…….. so depressed that I went to doctors twice but all I have is pain killer!!!
