I just found out about a week ago that I have endometriosis. The doctor has just informed me that if the pill doesn't help with the pain for the next 2 months, then he will be removing one of my ovaries. I have both of my parents trying to tell me to tell the doctor that if I end up with the surgery, make sure to take both because it will probably end up happening anyway. After reading this article about the disease, I just want to be rid of it and get back to life with my husband and 3 children, even thought it sounds like I've had this for quite a while, but everyone keeps telling me that "we don't always have answers to why the woman's reproductive system has pains." I was just told that recently until one doctor looked at the other doctor's notes, from my tubal ligation, and found out that the fluid that was drained from the cyst on an ovary had endometriosis in it and we could be looking at surgery. I'm just happy that I'm done having kids. It would be devistating to hear if I wasn't.

Have my friends "down under" gone bonkers?

It appears that Australia has allowed a small group of anti-tanning activists to perform a public lynching of the Australian solarium industry and one of it's leaders.

First of all, Claire Oliver's tragic death was not caused by solarium use because the latency period of this disease is far too long for her recent sunbed use to be the cause.

Secondly (and very importantly) while there is a "molecular signature" for UVR and BCC (Basal Cell Carcinoma) and SCC (Squamous Cell Carcinoma), there is no molecular signature for UVR and CMM (Cutaneous Malignant Melanoma). So why to the anti-tanning folks continue to say that sunlight (and solaria) causes melanoma when the evidence clearly shows that it doesn't? Because scaring the public about melanoma sells products containing sunscreen and provides "free advertising" to dermatologists!

A recent scientific study showed conclusively that that the development of facultative pigmentation (a.k.a., a "tan") significantly reduced the potential for UVR-induced skin damage. Therefore, the "smartest" thing Australian's can do is maintain a tan year-round.

Several recent studies have shown that solaria provide a controlled source of vitamin D-effective photons and there are numerous studies showing that there is an inverse relaltionship between vitamin D (25-OH-D) levels and the incidence/mortality of dread diseases like cancer, coronary heart disease, MS, diabetes, osteoporosis, etc.

Continuing to allow the sunscare coalition to turn Australia into a "nanny" state where everyone is afraid of sunlight (and solaria) will damage the health and welfare of the citizens of your great country.

Those directly involved in the aged care sector are not under any illusions as to the impact of the rapidly growing number of aged in our communities. Due to medical advances and improved attitudes towards personal lifestyle our elderly are living longer. There will be an increased need for residential care places. It is likely there will be an increase in the number of areas being classified as high need.

While we should not assume a growing population of elderly translates into a exponential increase in the need for residental care places, the evidence does suggest that when elderly eventually seek residential care, they will likely be aged between 75 years and 85 years and will likely require a degree of high care. Increasing numbers will display symptoms of dementia.

One of the many challenges will be the uneven distribution of aged populations. Areas will experience different rates of growth of elderly, some areas are well established to service the growth, others are not. An increasing shortage of people entering the workplace will impact on aged care providers and community package providers who will be hampered in their ability to offer competitive remuneration. The eligible workforce is not always situated where the need is greatest.

If the Government and the aged care sector persist in doing things as they always have, it is likely the sector will be unable to satisfy the growing need. The emerging environment for aged care is outside any of our previous experiences. This calls for 'out of the box' planning and thinking. The solution to the emerging aged care needs in any country will only be found through innovation policy and funding processes. This will require leadership by Government at all levels and leadership by the sector in advocating for change.
